Basically, model trains are of course significantly smaller in size compared to the actual real trains. Therefore, model trains are almost always considered as toys. However, people would not readily categorize such items as ordinary toys for kids because of two main reasons: one, model trains are very expensive compared to usual moving toys and two, model trains are complicated and need particular technical attention and care by knowledgeable adults.
For these reasons, it is very rare that there are young people who are into the hobby of collecting model trains, though there are few teenagers who are fond of collecting such items. It is also the reason why buying model trains is not an easy task if you are not too familiar with the activity.
