Bachmann are good and cheap. I have the Niagara 4-8-4 and it has pretty good pulling power, a smoker with good sync to the pistons and hooked up to a circa 1970's MRC Dual Loco Controller.

I used to get great low speed starts with my MRC transformers delayed slow motion control-- throw the switch and just run the throttle up to speed and wait--- the transformers circuit adds power ever so slowly, and the loco just creeps off and picks up speed at a realistic pace. The better the locos motor and drive the smoother it works. It worked the same in stopping, just throttle down and wait for it to come to a slow crawling stop. Worked best with ultra smooth stewart hobbies engine.

Well you're half right. He has DCC. Regular DC control can't make a smooth, slow start like on this vid.
